Renovation Tips from HGTV's Matt Blashaw

Matt Blashaw has hosted several series for the DIY Network and HGTV, and currently hosts the hit HGTV series Yard Crashers and Vacation House for Free. Get to know Matt before he join us at the Cincinnati Home & Garden Show. We caught up with the home improvement expert ahead of his Main Stage appearances. Check out our fun interview below.
Q: What are three things you can’t live without?
Matt: "The three things I can’t live without are: my wife, my amazing family (brothers and mother) and my workshop where I can create."
Q: What’s something that folks should watch out for when working with a contractor or interior designer?
Matt: "I would rather hire a contractor or interior decorator that has a passion for my job rather than time. Make sure the person you work with sees your vision and is excited to see it all come together just as much as you do. Just because someone recommended them for your job doesn’t necessarily mean the passion for the job comes with it."
Q: What are your best outdoor décor tips?
Matt: "String lights with classic clear bulbs add instant appeal to the backyard and help you utilize the space at every meal. I also like to add an area rug under my table or coffee tables to add that indoor element. Be sure to use outdoor fabric and don’t shy away from pattern or color. This is your chance to really make a splash in the backyard, so go big!"
Q: What’s one thing you wish every homeowner knew?
Matt: "You can do any project you put your mind to, but there is one thing that needs to be done first: screw it up. My motto: a person that makes few mistakes makes little progress. The only way to learn is to start the process and learn lessons along the way. After 20 years in the industry, I have made a TON of “progress” – we just edit it right out of the show so you don’t see it."
Q: What was the last picture you took with your phone?
Matt: "I just took a picture of my wife’s ultrasound. Yes, I’m going to be a daddy! I will be finding out soon whether it’s going to be a Blashaw boy or girl. Stay tuned!"
